Tracing Your Family History
Both St Mary le Strand and St Clement Dane's have registers which show births, marriages and deaths from 1558 onwards. There are also churchwarden's accounts and vestry minutes from the seventeenth century to 1900. All of these records can be found at the City of Westminster archives.
There are also rate books and deeds in the Westminster archives, which may reveal who lived in the parish in the seventeenth, eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, although much of the housing has since been demolished.
Many people contact us regarding ancestors originally buried in the burial grounds of St Mary le Strand and St Clement Dane's churches. Both of these burial grounds were cleared at the end of the nineteenth century and the remains taken to Brookwood cemetery, near Woking. Unfortunately, no records remain of the tombstones which were in the burial grounds, or of their inscriptions.
